Hellenic Consortium for Geriatric Medicine (HCGM)
The Hellenic Consortium for Geriatric Medicine was created in order to unite professionals working in the field of Geriatric Medicine, and also to enhance the status of our specialty in Greece. To actively pursue this mission, the HCGM designated two initial actions.
First, a collaborative bid by the Hellenic Consortium for Geriatric Medicine was submitted in April 2017 for the hosting of the 16th International EuGMS Congress, to be held in Athens in 2020. Then, a meeting was held on June 26, 2017 at the Electra Metropolis Hotel, by the Hellenic Consortium for Geriatric Medicine, where the Executive Board of the European Geriatric Medicine Society (EuGMS) were invited to discuss the difficulties and also to gauge the strategy of the Hellenic Consortium's collaborative bid. This meeting's success resulted in a renewed perspective for Geriatric Medicine in Greece, and the proposal of our country as a candidate (among Sweden and Israel) in the official competition to host the EuGMS congress; despite Geriatric Medicine as a specialty still not being recognized in Greece .
Finally, the competing bids were presented on the 20th of September 2017 during the 13th International Congress of the EuGMS in Nice, France. The Hellenic Consortium's bid was jointly presented by the geriatricians: Marina Kotsani (HeSSRA Member), Stavros Kosmidis (HeSSRA Member), George Soulis (HeSSRA Second Vice-President), Ioannis Elloul (Vice-President of the PSGG) with the organizational assistance of HeSSRA's Strategic Development Manager Evi Voudikari. After detailed evaluation by the EuGMS' executive board, the Greek bid was declared the winner!
It was therefore announced that on October 7th-9th, 2020 the Megaron Athens International Conference Centre will be the venue for the 16th International Congress of the EuGMS, and will welcome more than 2000 geriatricians, general practitioners, cardiologists, internists, neurologists, biologists, researchers, and allied healthcare professionals from across Europe and the World.
The Hellenic Consortium for Geriatric Medicine – H.C.G.M will oversee, as the leading academic body, the hosting of the European Geriatric Medicine Society's (EuGMS) 16th International Congress, to be held on the 7th-9th October, 2020 at the Megaron Athens International Conference Centre. In order to accomplish this project in a collaborative manner, the Hellenic Consortium for Geriatric Medicine was established, including the:
- Hellenic Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology (H.S.G.G),
- Hellenic Society for the Study and Research of Aging (He.S.S.R.A)
- Hellenic Association for Geriatrics and Gerontology (H.A.G.G)
- Hellenic Society for Geriatric Oncology (H.S.G.O)
- Hellenic Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (H.S.P.R.M)
Ioannis Elloul, Associate Professor of Neurology at the University of Patras Medical School and Vice-president of the Panhellenic Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology, will be the President of the 16th International Congress of the EuGMS and is currently the President of the Hellenic Consortium for Geriatric Medicine.
As part of the effort towards the 2020 EuGMS Congress, the Hellenic Consortium for Geriatric Medicine is committed to organizing a series of pre-Congress seminars in 2018, 2019 and early 2020 in Athens, Thessaloniki, and Balkan and Middle Eastern countries. The Consortium's objective is to invigorate the Greek Geriatric Medicine community and to build bridges enhancing the development of Geriatrics in the Balkans and the Middle East. This year's seminar, entitled "Healthy Aging: The Role of Diet and Physical Activity" and organized by SIGNUS - Professional Congress Organiser, is the start of this pre-Congress series and will be held on November 10th, 2018 at the Hellenic Pasteur Institute.
The hosting of the "ΑΘΗΝΑ 2020" EuGMS Congress is a crucial component of our vision for the future of Geriatric Medicine in Greece, a vision of promoting European standards in the theoretical and practical management of the elderly population, and of implementing integrative multi-disciplinary patient care.
